Eiderdown

Wild-gathered Icelandic eiderdown, hand-filled to your size and warmth. Made to order in three to four weeks, then five to seven business days in transit, certified by the Icelandic Government, and warranted for ten years.

The down cannot be farmed. It is lifted by hand from nests the ducklings have already left, over a few weeks each June, and all of Iceland yields around three tonnes in a year. One comforter takes the down of roughly sixty nests, which is what the price reflects: scarcity and hand labor, not markup.

Every piece is filled to order by a single artisan, in Light, Medium or Warm, from Twin through Cali King or to any dimension you need. It ships with a government certificate naming the farm, a breathable cotton storage bag and a care guide, under a ten-year craftsmanship warranty.

Questions

Before you order

If your question isn't here, speak to the people who make these. We answer within a working day.

What exactly is eiderdown, and why is it so expensive?

Eiderdown is the down the wild common eider plucks from her own breast to line her nest. It cannot be farmed. All of Iceland produces around three tonnes a year, gathered by hand from abandoned nests over a few weeks each June, and one comforter needs the down of roughly sixty nests. The price reflects that scarcity and the hand labor of cleaning and filling it.

Which fill weight should I choose?

Choose by bedroom temperature, not season. Light suits rooms above 68°F / 20°C and hot sleepers, Medium suits most homes between 61–68°F / 16–20°C and is our most popular choice year-round, and Warm suits bedrooms below 61°F / 16°C. Eiderdown breathes with your body, so a single comforter usually works all year.

How long does an order take to arrive?

Each comforter is filled to order by one artisan, which takes three to four weeks, then five to seven business days in transit. Shipping is free, insured and worldwide, and you will receive tracking as soon as your piece leaves Iceland.

Is any bird harmed to collect the down?

No. The down is lifted only from nests the ducklings have already left. The common eider has been a protected species in Iceland since 1847, and our sourcing is aligned with the Responsible Down Standard. Because our income depends on the colony returning, we protect the nesting grounds year-round at our own cost.

What certification comes with my order?

Every piece ships with an Icelandic Government certificate of authenticity naming the farm and the season the down came from. Cotton shells are OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified, and sourcing is aligned with the Responsible Down Standard.

Can I order a custom size?

Yes. Alongside the standard Twin through Cali King sizes we make to any dimension at no surcharge — tell us the measurements at checkout and we will confirm the fill weight with you before production starts.

How do I care for it?

Dry clean only, with a specialist familiar with down, and only every few years. Between cleans, air it and shake it to restore loft, and store it in the breathable bag provided rather than compressed in a vacuum bag.

What does the warranty cover, and can I return it?

Every comforter carries a ten-year craftsmanship warranty covering stitching, baffle construction and shell integrity. Standard sizes can be returned within 30 days unused and in their original packaging; custom-sized pieces are made specifically for you and are not returnable.
