About the company

A small Icelandic house, run by the same family for four generations

The Eiderdown is a family-owned company started from Icealnd, on the West Fjords and East Fjords of Iceland. We began in 1960 as a single farm supplying Eiderdown to European bedding houses. Today we design, make and sell our own collection direct, from the same farms.

Fourteen people work here. There are no investors, no licensing agreements, and no third-party manufacturing. Every order is filled, stitched, inspected and shipped by us.

We make a small number of things and we intend to keep making them for a long time.

How we run the business

Four commitments we hold to, including when they cost us

01

We know what we sell

Every product has a reason for being in the collection. We work with carefully selected materials and makers, and we do not offer something simply because it is easy to source.

02

Quality before quantity

Our collection is built around materials, craftsmanship and consistency. Whether a piece is made through our own production or by a trusted partner, we choose quality over simply increasing our range.

03

Made to be kept

We believe well-made products should have a long life. We choose materials and construction with everyday use in mind, creating pieces that are made to be lived with rather than quickly replaced.

04

Everything is verifiable

We believe in being clear about what goes into our products and how they are made. Where applicable, certifications, material information and relevant product documentation are available for verification.

Beyond the down

The rest of the collection, and who makes it

Eiderdown is our own. Everything else comes from workshops we have visited and buy from directly, year after year. Four of them supply most of the collection.

Shell cottons & silks
A family weaving mill in Switzerland, since 1988
Bed linen
European flax, spun and woven in Belgium
Throws & blankets
Handweavers in Peru and a wool mill in Yorkshire.
Home decor
Icelandic ceramicists and woodworkers.
Responsibility

What the company is accountable for

We are small enough for our decisions to remain personal. We know the people we work with, the materials we use and the standards we expect. Responsibility is considered at every stage, from sourcing and production to packaging and the life of each piece.

People and fair work
We work with makers and partners who value skilled work, fair working conditions and long-term relationships. We believe good products begin with respect for the people who make them.
Responsible sourcing
We carefully select the materials and suppliers behind our collection. Where applicable, we work with certified materials and established partners who can provide the documentation needed to verify their standards and origin.
Shipping and packaging
We keep packaging considered and purposeful. Products are protected for their journey without adding unnecessary layers, using recyclable and reusable materials wherever practical.
Made for a longer life
The most responsible product is often the one that does not need replacing. We focus on quality, construction and materials that are made to be used, cared for and kept for years.

Where the down comes from

The company is one half of the story. The bird, the coastline and the season are the other.
